Southern Poverty Law Center recently released a report, “Cruel Confinement: Abuse, Discrimination, and Death Within Alabama’s Prisons,” which details the horrific conditions present within prison walls. Medical treatment has suffered due to inadequately trained and overworked staff. In addition, disabled prisoners are left unassisted and unable to go to pill call to receive medication. The report concludes that Alabama’s prison system must be drastically reformed, citing the Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Plata, which condemned depriving prisoners of adequate medical care. Southern Poverty Law Center has recommended filing an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) grievance to address these problems.
