MADRE has released a statement in support of the United Nations Human Rights Committee’s recently released Concluding Observations on Haiti, commending the inclusion of recommendations submitted by the human rights organization and others in a report. In its Observations, the Committee appealed to the government of Haiti to punish those who commit crimes of violence against LGBT individuals and pass legislation to fortify the legal structures protecting victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. MADRE noted that there are currently revisions to Haiti’s Penal Code pending before the Parliament that would “go a long way to comprehensively address gender-based violence and violence and discrimination against LGBT people.”
