Freedom House has published a report on the actions of leading democracies regarding policies supporting democracy and human rights outside their own borders. The only country found to have a “very strong” level of support was Sweden, while the United States and European Union fell short of expectations with “moderate” support levels. Sarah Repucci, project director for the report, called for action: “Few leading democracies consistently stand up for their values beyond their borders…Democracies must pay more attention to places where democracy and its advocates are most under threat.” This unwillingness to support democratic institutions comes at a key time: authoritarian regimes are mounting growing challenges to democracies in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.
