MADRE and the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) have vociferously denounced the execution of two men by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) for the alleged commission of sodomy. The Neinava Province branch of ISIS published photos on January 17 showing the two men prior to their execution, after which they were pushed from the top of a high building. MADRE and IGLHRC have sought to remind the world media, foreign governments, and international public that ISIS’s “court system” is neither internationally recognized nor cognizant of due process rights. MADRE and the IGLHRC have also pointed out that this execution gives credence to their previously stated fears regarding the safety of LGBTI individuals in Iraq, who are “at imminent risk of death due to the stated intention of the Islamic State to kill anyone believed to be gay or engaged in same-sex activities.”
