Operation of Women’s Freedom (OWFI) in Iraq recently released a statement detailing the trafficking of women and girls in Iraqi cities controlled by Daesh (aka ISIS/L). The sexual slavery of Iraqi women is based on ancient tribal traditions, which use women as means of bartering and treats them as the spoils of war. Women who are ransomed and returned to their homes often face rejection from their communities. OWFI has called on the Iraqi government to respect the rights of women and to end practices that treat women’s bodies as a commodity to be bought and sold.
