Human Rights first has reported on a panel of U.N. experts fear that Tagi Al-Maidan, an American citizen, has been subjected to harsh treatment that may include torture. The report outlines how Mr. Al-Maidan was arrested by mainly plain clothes men, subjected to inhuman treatment including beatings to the torso and face. At the sight of this treatment, Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) in Al-Qodhaibiya, Bahrain, he was forced to make a confession that he assaulted a police officer. Mr. Maidan asserts this confession is false and extracted through torture. He remains in jail. Jordan, a party to the UN Convention against Torture, has denied these claims despite evidence to the contrary.
