On October 25, Human Rights Watch released a report revealing poor treatment of people with psychosocial disabilities in Somaliland. The report chronicles the institutionalization of the disabled against their will and the abuse and inhumane living conditions, specifically in private run facilities. The facilities are not focusing on treating patients and instead are using prison like methods to control the patients. These methods include solitary confinement, detention, and, at times, beating and chaining patients to control their movements. Somaliland acknowledged the poor treatment in 2014, but the government has not taken action to address the treatment of the mentally disabled.
