According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), about sixteen million girls from the ages of six to eleven will not have the chance to attend school. UNESCO says that about eight million boys, half the amount of girls, are not able to attend school. The disparities are largest in sub-Saharan Africa, Arab states, and parts of Asia. UNESCO hopes that with global initiatives, these numbers can be greatly reduced. These facts were released in time for International Women’s Day on Tuesday, March 8, 2016.

This news story highlights the gender disparity in education that still exists and the need to reinforce that education is a human right that everyone should be allowed to pursue.
