The Robert F. Kennedy Center for Human rights joined several other organizations calling on Guatemala to reject a recent sanctioning of Judge Yassmin Barrios by the country’s lawyers’ association. The sanction is seen as retaliation for Judge Barrios’ action as presiding judge in the trial of former dictator Efraín Ríos Montt. This sanction is one of many actions taken against Judge Barrios and seen as another attempt to de-legitimize the first successful domestic prosecution of major human rights violations and crimes. Guatemala’s Judicial Disciplinary Board will review the sanction and public reprimand, having already rejected a prior complaint against Judge Barrios just last year.
