Today, Special Rapporteur on Torture Juan E. Méndez joined other United Nations human rights experts in expressing alarm over the potential release of convicted genocide perpetrator Milorad Trbic. In 2009, Bosnian State Court convicted Mr. Trbic of committing genocide in Srebernica, for which he was sentenced thirty years in prison. However, the Bosnian Constitutional Court recently overturned the verdict and ordered a retrial. The international community is calling on the Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina to keep Mr. Trbic detained until he is retried, as he has been convicted of the most grievous international crimes and could pose a danger to his victims.
